THE GEORGE McWHORTER LEGACY II
(May 10, 1931 - April 25, 2020)

OUR MEMORIES OF GEORGE
1. In George's church after his performance at the Sunday service.
2. Last farewell outside of George's Louisville apartment

I covered the highlights of George's long, remarkable life at
www.ERBzine.com/george Mirrored at www.erbzine.com/mcwhorter
Shared on this page are our personal memories of George McWhorter
who devoted much of his life to preserving the
Legacy of the Life and Works of Edgar Rice Burroughs

I first met George at various ERB Dum-Dum and ECOF conventions.
But we really got to spend some time with him and take in the full scope of his ERB collection
when he invited Sue-On and I to go on a full guided tour of the Rare Books section at the University of Louisville.

The Ekstrom Library houses the Nell Dismukes McWhorter Memorial Edgar Rice Burroughs Collection
~ the world’s largest institutional collection of the works of the creator of Tarzan,
including all appearances in print, posters, film and videotape, manuscripts and memorabilia.

The Burroughs collection is located in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections
on the ground floor of Ekstrom Library Building.
We uploaded hundreds of photos of this excperience in our ERBzine at:
https://www.erbzine.com/mag4/0402.html
This was over 20 years ago when Web storage space was limited and photos had to be displayed in rather small sizes.
George was a gracious host and shared many inside stories with us. . .
and allowed us to do a "hands-on" with all the rare items.

He invited us to come back anytime,
which we did a number of times later after which we were able to post much larger photos of a "virtual tour".

I stayed in touch with George during all this time.
He was so impressed with my coverage of our visits that
he invited me to take over his Burroughs Bibliophiles Website.

Vern Coriell had formed the Bibliophiles many years before and had
issued scores of Burroughs Bulletin and Gridley Wave magazines.
When Vern died these publications ceased.

George used the facilities at U of L to resume publication of
The Burroughs Bulletin New Series and the Gridley Wave.
He published the Bulletin every three months and they were
sent free to members of the Bibliophiles who paid annual fees.

When George asked me to take over the Bibliophiles Website
he promised me a Lifetime Membership with the Bibliophiles.

As a volunteer I have regularly updated this site and
paid all domain registration and Web hosting fees every year.

George sent me full zine info for every issue and
we used this to create an online INDEX for each issue.

He also requested that after a suitable time that I
upload reprints of of the Bulletin and Gridley Wave on the Web.
This I gladly worked on and hosted since
George had given me a Lifetime Membership in the Bibliophiles.

Our last visit with George was before he retired from the University.
On the Sunday after our weekend visit to see the latest items in his ERB collection
he invited us to see his office at his church before the service.

He had soloed at his church for 40 years
- and we were thrilled to finally have the chance to hear him perform.
Despite being in his late 80s, George's voice was still rich
and powerful and fully captivated his audience.

Later we dined at his favourite restaurant and drove around the city.
We ended our visit and said our goodbyes at his apartment.
Sadly, this was to be the last time we would see him.

When George retired from the University due to ill health,
our BB Index project came to a halt since the BB editorship was turned over to a new Editor.
However, the Reprints authorized by George are still online in ERBzine:
