Dear Nelle:-

Picture the quiet scene of the living room in a more or less (use your judgment) typical American home late Xmas afternoon, the gifts unwrapped, the room illuminated by the strings of lights (Westinghouse) from the Xmas tree. There is even the customary wreath in the window, slung together by the lord of the manor with evergreen boughs, wire, and cusswords.

Comes the voice of the inspiration of it all "How funny," she says, "how funny you didn't get a necktie from my Mother."

"Listen," I reply, "listen! The whole California delegation remembered us high, wide and handsome! Tie, and for shame!" said I. "Tsk, tsk!"

(Editors note: But Oh! how I lied! Oh, how I had needed, wanted, and looked forward to that one necktie.  End of editors note.)

Scene two: Dec. 26, the birthday of an average citizen, one day younger than Christ. The doorbell. Aha! the belated Xmas gift from a business associate: A Necktie! Well, well, well -- halt! the doorbell. A special delivery from Quincy Michigan. A birthday present from the sister: ahaaa! two neckties!! Well, well, well and well!! What! the doorbell!!! From California! Sit still, my heart!! Wait, it can't be! But yes! Yes, it is!!! From the commisseur of all neckties! And from Bullocks! Three neckties! Hey! Marie!

Epilogue:
I thank you. They are beautiful. The one I am now wearing (the one with the rather large pattern) tops them all in my estimation.

And this letter is neither an exaggeration nor a burlesque. I  definitely needed neckties. Period

Add to that the feat of anybody on earth remembering my birthday on top of all the Xmas hullaballoo, and you may know I am always touched, be it only a stick of chewing gum.

All of us here send our best wishes for a healthy, happy and prosperous 1946.

Sincerely, Stud.
