This work of art continues to celebrate the community
named for the character Tarzan,
the iconic figure in the series of twenty-five
novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
In this mosaic Tarzan and Jane accompanied by
their faithful chimpanzee companion,
are surrounded by the exquisite plants and animals
of the African jungle,
several species of which are now in danger of
OUR VANISHING WORLD
This mosaic celebrates the community of Tarzana,
named in 1927 for the literary character "Tarzan"
to honor its distinguished resident,
Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950).
Now, almost a century after Tarzan of the Apes
was first published in 1912,
many species of African wildlife face extinction.
The plants and animals chosen for this work of
art are all endangered species
depicted here to raise awareness of their plight.
