Dear Vernell:
Thank you for sending the Burroughs material. Your "Burroughs Bulletins" are always interesting - especially to another Burroughs.
Your account of the visit to my Father a number of years ago brought back many pleasant memories, not only of Dad, but of yourself. We all greatly enjoyed meeting you at that time.
In your last Bulletin I was exceptionally fascinated by the article of Mr. Boddan in which he scientifically and relentlessly analyzed the construction off the typical Burroughs story. His scrutiny of the Burroughs grammar brought to mind an incident that occurred back around 1927 or 1928, I believe, when Dad became self-conscious about the quality of his writing. I remember some critics of that day not only ridiculed all his plots , but veritably tore to shreds his syntax. In an attempt to polish his stories he hired the services of an English teacher. Her instructions from Dad were to grammatically correct his literary output from day to day. I can still recall the pages of manuscript which she would regularly return "corrected" to him. Judging form the mutilated appearance of the pages I am sure that this good lady was attempting to justify the remuneration that Dad gave her. This butchery did not last too long. Dad made the remark to us that while she perhaps knew more about grammar than he did, he suspected he knew more about writing stories than she. "She has taken all the guts out of my bad writing," he said.
If Dad were to have had the opportunity to read Mr. Bogdan's article, I know he would have been highly flattered. But at the same time he undoubtedly would have remarked, "Is that the way I did it?"
            Best wishes to you, Vernell,

Dear Jack:
I've just finished reading your TREASURE OF THE BLACK FALCON;  went through it in one sitting this Sunday evening, for I just couldn't put it down.
Congratulations on a stimulating tour de force.  It is one of the most fantastic things I have read in a long time, but with the authentic Burroughs touch and vivid imaginative quality. In truth, the mantle of Elijah is fallen upon Elisha. Your Dad would have been so proud. . . .
You have ably proved that physical handicaps are no deterrent to artistic expression, even though the form of such expression may vary. God bless you for finding new fields to conquer. We'll all be looking forward to more great yarns from J.C.B.
        Sincerely,
        Henry (sig)

Dear Henry:
It was kind of you to take the time to write me about TREASURE OF THE BLACK FALCON which you say was reading one sitting - and on a Sunday!
Your note was most encouraging for I value your opinion greatly and have never ceased to admire your magnificent GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY BIBLIOGRAPHY OF EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS.
    Thank you for your thoughtfulness.

Dear Mr. Burroughs:
I have just finished and sent off, at Vernell Coriell's request, a short review of "Treasure of the Black Falcon" for publication in THE GRIDLEY WAVE (I think). I enjoyed the book, and think you will find the review generally favorable.
However, there was one thing that I found most puzzling and I would appreciate you telling me what it meant. On page 94 there is a sentence referring to the underwater rifles that shoot pellets of salt. It reads: "It was similar in principle to the later well-known Aqualian rifle used by the hordes that overran the city of San Francisco.
It makes no sense, in or out of context with anything else in the story. The only guess I can make at the moment is that you did some revision, and it was a sentence that you forgot to remove. Or perhaps it is an oblique reference to be used a as tie-in to some other book you have written.
I will be looking forward with pleasure to any future JCB books.
        Very truly yours, (sig)

Dear Mr. Howard:
Thank you for the letter concerning my TREASURE OF THE BLACK FALCON. I shall be looking forward ot reading your review of this - favorable or otherwise.
As to the cryptic passage on Page 94, your last guess was correct - ". . . .  perhaps it is an oblique reference to b e used as a tie-in to some other book you have written."
The "other book" was a novel by my brother and me entitled BOTTOM OF THE WORLD, which appeared in Startling Stories, September, 1941.

Dear Sirs:
Thank you for you letter of April 3. I certainly appreciate your sending me the copy of TARZAN OF THE AIR; it enhances my ERB collection considerably. And thank you for the information on Mr. and Mrs. Lawler. An autographed edition is so much more valuable when one knows the connection between Mr. Burroughs and the book's first owner.
I have enclosed the two copies of TREASURE OF THE BLACK FALCON for autographing, and return postage. Thank you. I hope to see more stories from your family in the future. I especially would like to see the four stories published in pulp magazines in 1939-1941 republished and preserved in Ballantine editions.
I have another bit information you may be interested in:
    Club du LIvre d'Anticipation
    24 rue de Mogador
    Paris 9e, France
Announces "de luxe omnibus edition of ERB's novels AT THE EARTH'S CORE and PELLUCIDAR in French. . .  $6.50"  Announcement is within attractive brochure describing volume, but all else is in French.
I have heard from Vern Coriell and he says he plans to include my story, "Gambula's Hunt," in the upcoming Burroughs Bulletin. Unfortunately, I have not heard from Caz about the poem, "In Memorium: Lord Greystoke," and so I have written again to him today about the matter. I took the liberty of quoting your approval of and hopes of publication for the poem. I am so very pleased you liked the poem, for I was very proud of my accomplishment with it. AS you had suggested, I had given it a great deal of thought.
I discovered that THE EFFICIENCY EXPERT is missing form the list of titles on your stationary. Will this be corrected, and where should it be placed in the list? Would it be possible for me to have an unused sheet of the stationary for my collection?
Could you provide me with addresses to write: Mr. Frank Frazetta, Mr. Richard Lupoff, Mr. Robert W. Fenton, Mr. Ron Ely, and the NBC TARZAN show?
I'm certainly glad to see the publication of I AM A BARBARIAN begun. You may certainly count on me for two copies. I hope you will be able to continue to issue the other unpublished works, autobiography, etc., in the future. And I would certainly like to see the publication of the deluxe volume of TARZAN OF THE APES which is mentioned here and there in the various fan publications. Being a Junior in college, I have reached the age at which many of my friends have begun to get married, and I have been giving copies of TA in Ball. or Whitman editions, as presents, but I would be much prouder of my favorite work as a gift, it it were available in a more suitable volume, more indicative of its true place among American classics.
Thank you so  much for all your help.
            Sincerely,
            Jim Thompson (sig)

Dear Hully:
I got your list of my art work made up over the weekend. Pardon my typing, I am not as good at it as I was when in school.
I know I went into more than you wanted but while I was at it I wanted to cover the whole story. I tried to show the real meat, the related things and the non-Burroughs. You will note that use in a fan magazine makes items only related.
I ask Vern and Richardson to make lists but doubt if they do, for me. You better write them. I will send them both copies of my list to try and push them.
Caz has all the Canaveral illos, there must have been about 127 or so, except Lupoff has two Blaines. Frazetta has DJ for Tales of Three Planets and Hines has the train Frontis for Tarzan Twins.
Also I gave Sam Peeples a Matania. I think the fight on board the ship.
This is all the real art work I know of in the hands of collectors.
No charge for the Japanese Tarzans. I will get it back in living flesh. From you know where. Glad to know you got them.
I will try and get you a copy of the record in Japanese if I can. I gave the extra I had to Hyde. Sorry.
Glad to hear you are publishing. I Am A Barbarian. Looks like I would have to pick it up at a bookstore for just some skin off my behind instead of my right arm You know I don't really want a copy, much!
I really enjoyed John's Black Falcon. He sent me an autographed copy (He is one of the nice guys). I did not want to read but to keep clean for my collection. I finally got some copies so I could read one. It is a good story. I wrote him about it and ask him to write a story around the three paintings you have that he did. Trouble is I suppose it would cost to much to reproduce them in a book. Anyway they look like a swell story also.
Let me know if you don't understand my list of art.

Dear John Coleman Burroughs -
I have mailed your new book to Hully for his autograph and requested he bring it out for you also to autograph it to me.
I just wanted to tell you that enjoyed reading it. I found it most interesting, and stayed up later than I should have several evenings reading it. You got me "hooked" by it, and I didn't want to put it down. I think you developed your details of the under sea city (country) quite well. You appeared to have put a lot of work into it, working everything out. I would appreciate it very much if you would autograph my copy for me.
I hope your health is improving, and continues to improve.

Dear Sirs:
First, I have enclosed a money order in the amount of $6.00 for the First Edition of I AM A BARBARIAN.  I am very happy to hear that this novel is finally to be published. It is a shame that it will not have the beautiful illustrations that were so much a trade mark of earlier ERB, Inc. First Editions.
Second, I have enclosed a copy of John Coleman Burroughs novel, TREASURE OF THE BLACK FALCON, which I have had bound in hard covers. I would very much like Mr. Burroughs to autograph this for me. I would have gone on to tell Mr. Burroughs how much I enjoyed this novel and hope that he will write others but I wrote to Ballantine and they informed me in reply, that they had forwarded my letter to Mr. Burroughs, so I would only be repeating myself, in a sense, to him.
Before closing -- can you please tell me how I may find out which newspapers are again carrying the TARZAN strip?  All the newspapers which I was familiar with, and which were available here in Wichita have not carried the strip since the end of February.
        Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Burroughs: --
The following item in our local newspaper caught my attention at once.
After reading "The Big Swingers" by Robert W. Fenton, I became aware that your father's folks had settled in the neighboring state of Massachusetts. The enclosed item mentioned that the Rev. George Burroughs also hailed form that state. Some few years ago I read that the same Rev. Burroughs was the first to hold a Sunday meeting in he city in which I reside, and in the passing years I had all but forgotten this until I read Mr. Fenton's book. Our local newspaper, as you will note, is running a series on important people in the state of Maine. While I have not followed this series as faithfully as I should, the enclosed item did arouse my curiosity to the fullest.
Can it be possible that the Rev. Burroughs was in some way connected with your father's forefathers some few generations ago?
No need to return the enclosed item as I have a duplicate of it.
I'm hoping soon "I Am A Barbarian" will be published.
Also, that John is hard at work on another novel to equal his "Treasure of the Black Falcon".
Last, but not least, that your father's incompleted Tarzan novel will be completed.
        Sincerely,
            Maurice B. Gardner

Dear John,
My wife and I just got back from Stan Vinson's the other day, and naturally we had a delightful time.
Stan showed us the painting he has by you, and as soon as my wife saw it she came at me with here usual "see, that's the type of work you should be trying", meaning of course for me to get my painting knives out. The knife work on that western scene is fantastic, you certainly have a beautiful technique. I agree with her, and you, that I should try it. I suppose I'll have to work up courage and try tackling a piece this summer.
The Lithographs. I'm at a loss for words. the face of the Negress and the Arab horseman. Are any other prints of these around? Do you have any of your lithographs for sale?
I would love to show these to my students. They are afraid of prints of any sort, and I think the whole problem lies in the fact, they just aren't sure of what can be done with a print!
Hope you are having a nice summer out there. I'm just trying to catch up on an accumulation of work that  piled up during he winter, mainly about six half finished canvases!
    Best regards,
        (sig) Bob

Dear Bob:
Thank you for your letter concerning my artwork that you recently saw at Stan Vinson's. I am glad you liked the western oil and the two lithographs. You were more than generous with your praise.
It seems to me from what you say that you may be a little too hesitant about trying new techniques and media.
Remember that we learn by experimenting. Building up a working acquaintance with as many media as possible enriches our personal way of expressing ourselves. In fact it is my belief that writing can be enriched also by what we learned in art school

Dear Author:
The Name of IV, a loose group of fans organized solely for this project, is attempting to compile a complete listing of all contemporary sf writers who have had published within the decade an original novel, collection, anthology, or non-fiction work relating to the genre.  Each entry will include a brief biographical summary together with a bibliography of every book-length work falling into the above categories.  Only through your cooperation will this index be possible.

We ask, therefore, for about ten minutes of your time in assisting us in filling out the enclosed questionnaire. To make the process as painless as possible, we have taken the liberty of typing in any information we either know or have guessed at -- you need only check its accuracy and then complete any blanks. Since this work is aimed primarily at libraries and collectors, we ask that careful attention be addressed to including your full birthname (if you have but one given name, please so state); and in preparing your bibliography along the guidelines we set forth. Because of space limitations, we can list only those works relating in some way to the broad spectrum of imaginative literature (i.e., science fiction, fantasy, heroic fantasy, weird-horror, and suspense stories with sf elements). Please include only volumes already published; make any further entries following the model(s) provided. The Work in Progress section should include only those books to be published in Fall, 1969, or later. If you have the time or inclination, you may wish to add some personal sidelight for your readers, or write about some aspect of science fiction -- possible variations are infinite.

When you have completed the form, please sign where indicated, certifying that the information sought is the complete data provided -- we have enclosed a self-addressed, stamped envelope. As our resources both in time and money are quite limited (we stand to lose a considerable sum in this venture), we ask that you have the courtesy to reply promptly; after all, we are providing you with free advertising -- by responding quickly you will save us both from troublesome follow-up letters. With thanks for your aid, we remain

Dear Hully:
You can't imagine my joy in receiving the autographed magazines and dust jackets from you. They are indeed treasures! I got a kick out of the way John autographed the dust jacket to TARZAN AND THE FORBIDDEN CITY: "Hastily from John Coleman Burroughs."
Through my brief association with you, it is easy to see that both you and John have inherited the charm and grace, wit, and kindness of your dear father. I only wish there was some way in which I could repay you two for your kindness.
I would very much appreciate your sending me a bibliography of your published articles as I would be interested in obtaining them. Looking through some volumes of The Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, I found one article by you entitled "Pleistocene Reborn" in the June-July, 1936 issue of Nature Magazine. I found the issue it was in and xeroxed off a copy of the article for my collection. Apparently the Reader's Guide doesn't index many of the magazines your articles appeared in. I figure that I ought to be able to purchase photo-copies of most of the articles from the college library or the main library in Rochester. Others, I might be able to obtain photo-copies of form the Library of Congress. I believe the Library of Congress does extend this service through the mails.
I noticed in the Reader's Guide, several articles about tools and crafts by John Burroughs, as well as articles by the author and naturalist John Burroughs. Most of the articles by the former appeared in such magazines as Popular Science. Could these have been written by your brother John?
Have you ever heard of a book entitled TARZAN THE MAN? I know nothing about the book other than its tittle and the fact that it has a green binding, according to the lady who told me about it. She was under the impression that Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote the book. I have written to the Library of Congress, asking for information on it, but haven't received a reply as yet. If it turns out to be anything of interest, I will probably review it in an issue of the Barsoomian.
            Sincerely, Paul (sig)

Dear Paul:
I appreciate very much your nice letter of May 11th, and am glad to know that the autographed dust-jackets and magazines arrived safely.
I cannot promise when I can supply you with a bibliography of my published articles and photographs. Much of this material is packed away in storage; but as soon as I am able to, I shall send you such a list.
I was most interested in the items you found in Reader's Guide regarding several articles about tools and crafts by a John Burroughs. I shall ask my brother about this; but I rather doubt that it is the same person.
I am likewise most interested in the book you refer to entitled TARZAN THE MAN. Is there any way you can arrange with the lady who told you about it to let you see a copy of it? I personally have never heard of that title. If you uncover anything more about it, I hope you will let me know.

Dear Joan, Jack and Hully:

This letter will serve as a reminder of our Meeting of the Board of Directors of ERB, Inc.  The meeting will take place at Jack's house in Malibu at 10:00 A.M. this coming Thursday, November 9.

I have enclosed herewith a proposed draft of the STOCK REDEMPTION AND RESTRICTION ON SALE AGREEMENT  for your perusal prior to the meeting.  I think this matter should be approached in several stages: first, you should all study the draft; then we should all discuss it at our Thursday meeting; at which time I want you to raise any questions you might have about it; after that, I will prepare another draft, incorporating in it any changes you wish to make; this draft should then be sent on to your individual attorneys, accountants, or other advisors for their comments.  If everyone can then agree upon a final draft, the agreement should be signed by each of you and on behalf of the corporation as expeditiously as possible.

I would like to add that in my opinion this proposed agreement is ideally suited to the problem.  It will provide for the orderly continuation of your business; it will introduce a degree of certainty into the question of estate planning and taxes and, most important of all, it can be terminated by either of you at any time and for any reason. On Thursday, I will explain in detail exactly how the agreement will operate in practice.
Warmest regards,
EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS, INC.

Dear Mr. Burroughs:
Payment in full was received today from John Burroughs' accounting firm for my statement of secretarial services, although it was, in actuality, the final payment to Essy's Art Gallery for the very lovely John Burroughs painting now hanging in my living room.

Thank you very much for your efforts on my behalf.  When next you see your father would you be so kind as to tell him that if his health should permit him to visit Avalon again, I would be most happy to show him my personal gallery, of which the most prominent painting is his own beautiful impression of a cove here on the Island. Truly, working with him was so interesting and memorable that it was almost reward in itself.

But not quite!

Sincerely,
sig
Alice Crosby
