(January 17, 2015 – Tarzana, CA) Norman's story begins in 1243, during the power struggle between King Henry III and the KIng's brother-in-law, Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester. At 17, Norman of Torn was the Greatest Swordsman in England, at 18  he had a large bounty on his head, and at 19 he was the leader of the most powerful and ruthless army in the land. And, the outlaw Norman of Torn becomes the most feared warrior of all England.

Raised and taught by the French fencing master, Jules de Vac, Norman was trained to be a simple, brutal, English-hating, killing machine. The only influence over him, besides de Vac, is a Priest who taught Norman his letters and chivalry towards women. But, the Priest was found mysteriously murdered in his cottage.

In another guise, that of Roger de Conde, Norman becomes involved with de Montfort's daughter, Bertrade – defending her against her and her father’s enemies. She notes in him a curious resemblance to the English King’s son and heir, Prince Edward.

As Norman begins to sense his true origins, de Vac turns against Norman – costing de Vac his life. The fencing master had kidnapped Norman as a child to serve as the vehicle of vengeance against the King. As de Vac dies, he reveals Norman's true origins. With his identity known, can Norman still be sure of winning the hand of Bertrade, daughter of Simon de Montfort, the King’s mortal enemy?

When Edgar Rice Burroughs first established himself as a writer with Under the Moons of Mars / A Princess of Mars in early1912, he was asked by his publisher, Thomas Metcalf of All Story Magazine, to write another story and to center it in medieval times. He did so, submitting The Outlaw of Torn. After three rewrites, it was still rejected by Metcalf. But he was told to not give up and to write something else. His next novel was Tarzan of The Apes which established Burroughs' writing career. The Outlaw of Torn was finally published as a five part serial in New Story Magazine in early 1914, but it wasn’t published in book form until 1927. This is one of only two historical novels Mr. Burroughs wrote, the other being I Am a Barbarian, set in Caligula's Rome and first published in 1967 – seventeen years after Mr. Burroughs' death.

The Outlaw of Torn Team
WRITER Tom Simmons
Long-standing Edgar Rice Burroughs fan Tom Simmons wrote for the antiquities market before turning to screenwriting. “I read my first Burroughs novel – Pirates of Venus – at the age of 12 back in the 1960s. I’ve been an avid devotee ever since. I’d always thought it would be great fun to adapt a Burroughs book for the screen or other format."

A student of medieval history, Tom welcomes the challenge of adapting Burroughs’ 1914 novel The Outlaw of Torn into comic strip format. “The story was actually his second novel, written between A Princess of Mars and Tarzan of the Apes. And it’s the first of just two historical novels ERB ever wrote. The other is I Am a Barbarian, which was not published until 1967.”

At the top of Tom’s other projects list is Crispus Caesar, a graphic novel set in the Age of Constantine and featuring art work and colors by fellow TOOT team members Jake Bilbao and L. Jamal Walton. The story will be published as an e-book in early 2015.  Tom’s writing credits include nominations in five screenwriting categories at the 2010 Action on Film Festival.

ILLUSTRATOR  Jake Bilbao
Jake Bilbao is a Filipino Comic Book Artist. He has worked on Wolverine for Marvel Comics, Pathfinder for Dynamite Entertainment, Bloodrayne for Digitalwebbing Presents, and other Indie Comics.

Jake is now working with Tom Simmons and L. Jamal Walton to make The Outlaw of Torn novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs into a comic strip format.

The Simmons/Bilbao/Walton team is also in the final production phases of a graphic novel set in the Age of Constantine called Crispus Caesar. The story will be published as an e-book in early 2015.

LETTERING AND COLORING  L Jamal Walton
L Jamal Walton is a web and graphic designer, illustrator, colorist, and letterer currently based in Durham, NC. He has worked on projects big and small: Fist of Justice; Once Upon A Time Machine, Masters of the Universe; and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, to name a few.

More recently, Jamal has focused more of his time working on his own comic creations: Warmageddon; Ungoodwise; and Captain Evil & Diabla. He is always looking for opportunities to display his art at art exhibits and conventions, and to share his experience and skills in the craft of making comics via camps and workshops.
