EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS
SEPTEMBER 1, 1875 – MARCH 19, 1950
REMEMBERED ON THE WEB
On March 19, 2022
*** "On Sunday, March 19, 1950, Ed finished his breakfast and sat in bed, reading the comic pages. He was alone, and death came to him suddenly and quietly. The discovery was made by his housekeeper who, by prearrangement, notified his family and his physician, Dr. Herman Seal. Ed's desire for cremation had been expressed often in the past and in 1945 he left instructions that his ashes should be buried beside his mothers...under the...tree on my pet lot."
After cremation at the Chapel of the Pines In L.A., the ashes were buried beneath the tree that shaded the offices in Tarzana.
Ed was 74 when he died -- five months short of his 75th birthday. His remains were "now a part of the nature he had worshipped and sought to protect -- the nature whose creatures he had always viewed as superior to man." -- Irwin Porges, Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Man Who Created Tarzan
During a visit with Danton at his Tarzana home I had the chance to handle and examine the inside of the metal container that had contained ERB's ashes before they were buried under the ERB, Inc. tree in Tarzana (BH)
The tree that stands over ERB's ashes:

IN MEMORY, EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS
SEPTEMBER 1, 1875 – MARCH 19, 1950

by John Martin
It’s over seven decades now
Since Ed gave up the ghost,
Some Tarzan tales were kept in print
But not the case for most.
...
G&D and Whitman
And the movies and the Dells
Kept Tarzan in the Fifties
From bidding his farewells.
...
But came the 1960s
Like the dawning of a day
And suddenly the logjam broke:
ERB’s books were back to stay.
...
The Burroughs Boom, they called it.
As titles hit the stands,
And those who'd never heard of ERB
Became the newest fans.
...
Canaveral and Ballantine
And Ace and Dover, too
Were churning out the volumes
With art that shone anew.
...
'Twas Krenkel and Frazetta,
And Emsh and Powers came
With Ivie and with Crandall
And even Mahlon Blaine.
...
Issued and re-issued
And re-re-issued since
And now with P.O.D,
They'll ne'er be out of print.
...
Ol' ERB is gone and that's a fact,
But as we utter "darns,"
We know that in reality
He lives on through his yarns.
...

PUSHING THE ENVELOPE by John Martin
Foster Miller, membership chairman of the American First Day Cover Society, sent me this first-day cover of Edgar Rice Burroughs and his stamp, issued in 2012.
The stamp was modeled after the photograph on the cachet, an oft-seen image of ERB looking into a copy of "Tarzan and the Lion Man," the 17th of his 24 Tarzan books.
This cover was a joint effort of Miller and Cuv Evanson Cachets and has the Digital Color Postmark.

Martin Powell Remembers

Remembering author Edgar Rice Burroughs -- creator of Tarzan of the Apes, John Carter of Mars, and so much more, who passed away on this date, March 19, 1950.  Legend has it that he died peacefully in bed with the Tarzan newspaper comicstrip in his hands.

Professionally speaking, I'd be nowhere without his influence and imagination.  Also, personally, as a result of his books, and my privilege to write so many of his classic characters, I've gained a treasured second family among his relatives and devoted fans.

I quite simply cannot imagine my life without the inspiration of Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Nik Poliwko

In honor of Edgar Rice Burroughs, who passed on March 19th, 1950. Burroughs' stories and characters have been a lifelong inspiration for me. My youth was a richer place thanks to the imagination of Burroughs. The Tarzan novels, along with John Carter and Carson of Venus became staples of my young reading life. The Tarzan comic, as drawn by Russ Manning was one of my first artistic influences. I'm very grateful that over the years I've had the opportunity to have been a part of the Burroughs universe and to have illustrated Tarzan, The War Chief and The Jungle Girl comics for ERB. Inc. Here's to you, Edgar... and to the fantastic worlds you created!

ROBERT ALLEN LUPTON'S DAILY DRABBLE
REQUIEM

March 19: On this day in 1950, Edgar Rice Burroughs passed away.
ERB finished his breakfast and sat in bed, reading the newspaper comics. He was alone, and death was sudden and quiet. The discovery was made by his housekeeper, who by prearrangement, notified his family and his physician, Dr. Herman Seal. Burroughs' desire for cremation had been expressed often in the past and in 1945, he left instructions that his ashes should be buried beside his mother’s - under the tree in front of the Tarzana office.
I write an ERB  inspired 100 word drabble drabble every day. The drabbles are collected and published monthly at www.erbzine.com.  I wanted to post today's drabble, "Requiem" along with my 'On This Day" post.
REQUIEM
One Sunday morning, two young men stood in front of ERB, Inc. John placed several books under the tree. “Pat, the flowers.”

Pat positioned a rose wreath. “John, it’s sad that he died before we were born.”
“I don’t see it that way. As long as his books are in print, he still lives.”
“Agreed. Anything to say before we leave?”
“Yes. May astral projection be real, may his golden thoat be fast, may his sword be sharp, and his Barsoomian princess be beautiful. May he ride with her forever beneath hurtling moons and may his adventures never stop.”

“Amen.”
