Tarzan®  the famous jungle man created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, is one of the most widely known characters in modern fiction, having appeared in books, movies and on television. A legendary hero, Tarzan enjoys the distinction of starring in the first adventure comic strip, the first continuity strip, and the first strip to appeal to generation after generation for more than seven decades.

The Lord of the Jungle made his first appearance in a daily comic strip in 1929 with art by Harold Foster. In 1930 United Feature Syndicate (UFS) took over the syndication of Tarzan and launched the first Sunday comic in 1931 and hired Rex Maxon, who created 28 pages. Hal Foster took over the strip on September 27, 1931 until page #321 on May 2, 1937. At this time Foster created his PRINCE VALIANT Sunday pages which he produced until 1971.

Hal Foster Produced his PRINCE VALIANT  Creation Until 1971
In 1970, after tryout strips by several artists, Foster invited John Cullen Murphy to collaborate on the strip.
From 1971 on, Murphy drew the strip from Foster scripts and pencil sketches.
Foster continued to write the continuity until strip #2241 in 1980.
Murphy then drew it solo with scripts by his son
Cullen Murphy,

In March 2004, Murphy retired and turned the strip over to his chosen successor, illustrator Gary Gianni.
Scripting duties were passed on to
Mark Schultz
Schultz continued as the writer when
Thomas Yeates began as the strip's artist on April 1, 2012.
