FOREWORD
The two publishing companies, Ace and its spinoffs, Charter and Tempo, and Ballantine / Del Rey were competitors for many years. They competed for the dollar of the Edgar Rice Burroughs readers.

These two bibliographies, while in the same book, are quite different. The publishing history of the two, took divergent paths. So, the bibliographies are different, as you will see.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The road that led to this book is long and winding. The road started over 50 years ago, when I bought an Ace copy of “Tanar of Pellucidar”. I liked the Ace books better then, as they were 40 cents and the Ballantine printings were 50 cents. A dime was important back then. The road continued to buying more and more of the Ace and Ballantine books, until I had at least one copy of every title.  Then the collecting bug bit, and I started getting other printings of the books.  At first, I just wanted one copy of each cover artist, but that soon went to desiring copies of all of the variations.

Along the way, I had help from some great compilers and collectors. First, is a fine gentleman, Lee Barrie. Lee published a small pamphlet of the various paperback editions. This is where I learned of ad variations and other types of variations. After I had gotten everything on Lee’s list, I got in contact with the great Bill Ross, who showed me even more variations unknown to me.

Then, I ventured into the Ballantine / Del Rey printings of Canada. James ”Huck” Huckenpöhler was helpful in helping to identify some of these.

When I decided to do this book, I was encouraged by my great friend and fellow ERB collector, Joe Lukes.  Joe is the author of a great book on the ERB variations of the Grosset and Dunlap books. Joe reviewed endless copies of this manuscript and made many helpful suggestions.

Mike Conran supplied many pictures of the Ace and Ballantine ad sheets and other items in the picture gallery.  Bob Zeuschner was helpful with some of the Artists. Brian Bohnett was very helpful with the boxed sets.

Lastly, but by no means least, is Doug Holmes. Doug sort of took over as editor. He found many, many bone-head mistakes and made many, many suggestions. He also supplied many Canadian editions of which I was unaware. This book would not be of any great quality without his tireless efforts.

Announcement on the release of the book along with cover illos was also made in the ERBzine Facebook Group. www.facebook.com/groups/ERBzine

I considered doing this book for many years (at least 10), but kept finding more books, more variations.  Then I got involved helping Joe Lukes finish his book on the Grosset and Dunlap ERB books.  After Joe got his book printed, I got serious about my book and really started concentrating on finding all of the variations I could.  There are quite a few "reports" of variations that never resolved, even when I could find who started the "report".

Then the work of actually composing the book.  What form should it take, what to include, what order to include the information.  I tried several different formats.  I tried separating the Canadian editions from the US editions, but it made the bibliography difficult to use.  Then I had to find a publisher.  I don’t know how many rejections I got.  Publishers that were interested when I started where no longer interested.  So, I finally self-published.  The book contains pictures of ad pages from the books, so I had to pay for a copyright release.
