TARZAN AND THE SORCERER :: 1963
(Tarzan Aur Jadagur)
By
Robert Allen Lupton

Tarzan Aur Jadagur or Tarzan and the Sorcerer is a 1963 film from N. R. Brothers. It was directed by Radhakant and produced by Nattu. The music is by Suresh and Talway, the special effects by Narendra Mistry. Some translation title the movie, Tarzan and the Magician.

A businessman, Khanna is travelling on board an airplane with his wife, Kamala (Raj Rani) and a two year old son Tony. Several sources say they were traveling on a ship, but clearly those sources haven’t watched the film. There is an accident, and the three parachute out of the burning aircraft. Mother and father land in different places along the African coast. Kamala drops Tony. The boy is saved by a fairy who looks like Glinda, the Good Witch with wings. She takes him to the jungle to be raised by wild animals.

Tony becomes Tarzan (Azad). Kamala almost loses her mind after losing her husband and son. She lives with a sorceress, Rooplekha (Indira Billi), in the jungle. Rooplekha treats her like a daughter. Khanna, the father, takes a job as laborer with a company owned by Monohar, who has a beautiful daughter, Maya (Chita). He has two assistants, Chinchoo (Sunder) and Ghungroo (Tun Tun).Tarzan and Maya meet and, as required by plot and custom, fall in love. The dance, cavort, and sing several songs.

The evil sorcerer, Bhootnath (Mohan Sherry), also wants to marry Maya. He realizes that he will have to remove Tarzan from the picture and make several attempts to kill the apeman. Rooplekha always intercedes and saves Tarzan.

Finally Bhootnath finds the young lovers together and captures them. He is determined to sacrifice Tarzan to his devta (god) and marry the girl. Rooplekha learns of his plan and frees Maya and leaves her with Tarzan’s mother, Kamala.

She returns and confronts the sorcerer. She kills Bhootnath during their magic duel, but is severely injured in the battle.

She’s dying, but during her dramatic death scene, she reveals that Tarzan is really Tony, the son of Kamala and Khanna. The happy family reunites in joyful song and seem destined to live happily ever after. Whether Tarzan and Maya are ever to be married is left to the imagination.

Several of the cast members appeared in other Tarzan films. For the purposes of this article, I will only reference films that previously been featured in Unauthorized Tarzan Films on this website. Many of the actors appear on Tarzan films not yet reviewed in the Unauthorized Tarzan series.

Azad, arguably the most prolific Tarzan actor appeared in three other such films: Toofani Tarzan 1962, Tarzan and Circus, and Tarzan and Gorilla. He appeared in at least nineteen, possibly twenty Tarzan films. Various sources credit him in the film, Rocket Tarzan. I disagree, the posters and stills do not list the actors, but Azad is not listed in the credits. This is not necessarily conclusive, actors and actress appeared under several different names and I try to list them all, but there seem to be endless variants.
Detailed information about Azad, his life, and career are located at:

Chitra plays Maya, Tarzan’s love interest. Chitra also appeared in Tarzan and Circus. She is an Indian actress of Bengali origin and also a dancer. She was born in Kolkata, India. Before marriage her name was Chitra Mandal. Her career spanned decades. She was predominately a stage actress. More information about her is available at:

Sunder Singh was paired with Tun Tun as the comic relief in this film. He appeared in Tarzan and Circus and Tarzan and Hercules. More information and photos of Sunder appear at:
http://www.erbzine.com/mag67/6735.html

Two of the photographs have Sunder paired with Tun Tun.

The comic actress, Tun Tun, appeared in the 1962 version of Toofani Tarzan. She is an absolute joy to watch. I don’t understand a word she says, but her comedy transcends language. It is Hollywood’s loss that she never appeared in American movies. Tun Tun was the screen name of Indian singer and actress-comedian, Uma Devi Khatri, who was called "Hindi cinema's first-ever comedienne”. A detailed biography appears in the article, Toofani Tarzan at the following link.

Indira Billi appeared in two other Tarzan films, Tarzan and Hercules and Tarzan in Fairyland. She was an extremely popular Punjabi film actress during the 1960s and 70s. She also did several Hindi films. She was called a billi (cat) because of her eyes. She gradually accepted the name Indira Billi and acted in some popular Hindi movies like “Black Cat” with Balraj Sahni and “Mere Huzoor” with Raj Kumar. An article on Tarzan in Fairyland is forthcoming, but detailed information about Indira Billi is in the article, Tarzan and Hercules at this link.

Mohan Sherry is an actor, known for Ram and Balram (1980), Two and Two make Five (1980) and Inseparable Friends (1981). He changed his name from Gulsher Khan to Mohan Sherry for his career. He acted in Aansoo Ki Duniya when he was 16 years old. Later on he tried to become a leading man in films but met no success. He named himself "Sherry". The name "Mohan" was given to him by a mentor/ director. After his leading man fiascoes, he opened a restaurant, but later returned to films as character actor. He is credited with appearing in over 110 films.

Arvind Pandya was born in 1923, in Bhadran, Kheda, Gujarat, India. He is best known for Kama-Agni (2000), Manvini Bhavai (1993) and Mansai Na Diwa (1984).

Raj Rani is an actress and costume designer, known for Darogaji (1949), Procession of Memories (1973) and Ustad 420 (1969).
